A ten-century-old cross. Can you believe it? That’s what awaits us in Cimetière d’Andrésy. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s a living history book. A place where centuries whisper secrets from the ground. The Cimetière d’Andrésy boasts two distinct sections: the old and the new. Separated by a steep street they offer contrasting views of time. The old cemetery with its sweeping views of the Seine valley. The new one a more recent addition.

The old cemetery is truly remarkable. Its ancient stones tell stories of remarkable lives. We’re talking about General Simon Camille Dufresse a revolutionary soldier and governor of Naples Rome and Stettin. He even served as governor of Nantes and the Deux-Sèvres. A Baron of the Empire he rests here. His final wish was to be buried beside his comrade-in-arms General Lepic.

Then there’s Charles Foley. A prolific writer of tales plays and novels. Though largely forgotten today his works once captivated readers. He shares his resting place with his father Lieutenant Antoine Edouard Foley. A naval lieutenant who penned books on New Zealand. A fascinating detail his close friendship with Auguste Comte. One of Comte’s thirteen testamentary executors Foley was a staunch positivist. The motto “Order and Progress” on his tomb is a testament to this belief.

The old cemetery also holds the grave of Marie-Rose Fouqué a painter known for her landscapes still lifes and religious paintings. Her tomb stands near the entrance. You’ll see it immediately.

But the history of Cimetière d’Andrésy doesn’t end there. The discovery of a Merovingian necropolis in 1890 during railway construction is astonishing. Five hundred graves dating from the 5th 6th and 7th centuries were unearthed. A testament to a history that stretches far before the current cemetery itself. This discovery is further proof that this place is more than just a final resting place. It is a gateway to a fascinating past.

The new cemetery is more modest. Yet it holds its own poignant stories. The grave of a family who tragically lost four infants. Their photos on the tombstone are a heartbreaking reminder of the passage of time. Jean Bosc an organist and Raymond Renéfer a painter-engraver who documented the lives of soldiers during the First World War rest here as well. His works can be found in private collections and museums.

Walking through Cimetière d’Andrésy is an experience unlike any other. It’s an exploration of lives long past. It’s a journey through history. This is a place where memories sleep beneath the soil waiting to be rediscovered. Remember the stories you’ve heard today. Share them with others. For the Cimetière d’Andrésy is a treasure trove waiting for you to discover its untold tales.
