Built in 1825 the Várady-kastély stands before you. Its construction followed the plans of Splényi Szily Mária wife of the owner. The Splényi family of Tyrolean descent arrived in Hungary in the 1600s. Men of the family mostly pursued military careers. Colonel Splényi Ignác and his family settled in Páty in the early 1820s. They played a significant role in the village’s development for decades. Colonel Splényi Ignác was a passionate gardener. The courtyard in front of the Várady-kastély and the garden beyond reflect his designs. After Splényi Ignác’s death in 1840 the estate was sold. The family fell out of favor after their role in the 1848-49 War of Independence. Dicskei Várady József a court councilor bought the manor. He was known for his collecting passion. He had a remarkably rich library and collections of coins and minerals. Part of his collection was exhibited at the Hungarian National Museum in 1876. The Várady family left Hungary in 1944. They emigrated to Salzburg then Switzerland. After 1945 various organizations used the Várady-kastély. Páty’s local government reacquired it in 2008. The Várady-kastély stands as a testament to its owners’ lives and the turbulent history of Hungary. Its walls whisper tales of noble families gardeners and collectors. This is more than just a building. It is a living chapter in the book of Páty’s history. It is a reminder of times past a beacon of resilience and a symbol of a community’s determination to preserve its heritage. The Várady-kastély is waiting to share its stories.
