They weigh a hefty 32 tons, that’s about the same as five adult elephants! Now, this impressive work of art was created by the acclaimed American artist Richard Serra. He’s a big name in the art world, known for his minimalist sculptures that play with space and perception, just like these cones right here. The Reading Cones Sculpture, named for its birthplace, Reading, Pennsylvania, arrived in Chicago in 1990 as a gift from the Leo Burnett Company. It was intended to be a temporary resident of Grant Park. The plan was to move it to State Street Mall after its grand makeover. But guess what? The Mall was finished in 1996, and the Reading Cones? They’re still here, holding court in Grant Park, a testament to the unexpected twists and turns of urban planning. And you know what? They fit in perfectly, adding a touch of modern grandeur to this historic park.
