Hidden within the larger tapestry of Dresden, Reick whispers tales of transformation. Once a quaint farming village under Leubnitz’s authority from 1396, Reick’s destiny shifted with the arrival of the railway. This iron horse, a precursor to today’s autobahn, ushered in an era of industry and commerce. Reick blossomed. Factories sprouted, crafting everything from tools and turbines to cameras and paper. The remnants of the Erlwein gas holder still stand as silent witnesses to this industrial surge. Even as factories multiplied, Reick’s agricultural heart continued to beat, boasting 17 thriving market gardens around 1900. This growth spurred the need for schools. One such school, built on Hülßestrasse in 1927-29, was a marvel of modern design, considered one of Europe’s most advanced. Yet, echoes of Reick’s agrarian past linger in the preserved farmhouses of Altreick. Among them is the Laue farm, purchased by the famed astronomer Palitzsch for his daughter. The 20th century brought further change. Between 1925 and 1933, housing blocks rose west of Tornaer Strasse. Later, the expanding Plattenbaugebiet Prohlis reached Altreick, further blurring the lines between village and city. Reick’s story is one of adaptation, a blend of rural tranquility and industrial dynamism, woven into the fabric of Dresden.
