A shimmering expanse. That’s Emerald Lake at Bukit Batok Town Park. It’s not really emerald. More like a deep blue-green reflecting the sky. But the name sticks. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon.
This tranquil lake wasn’t always here. It started life as a granite quarry. The Gammon Quarry to be exact. They mined Gombak norite a unique type of rock found only in this area. The sounds of quarrying were so loud they gave the hill its name Bukit Batok. Batok means cough in Malay. Imagine the constant rumble!
They mined until the quarry went below sea level. That posed a threat to the local environment. The government stopped the mining. The quarry was abandoned. Rainwater slowly filled the space. The result is this beautiful lake.
The Housing and Development Board HDB initially planned to fill it. They intended to build a road. But they changed their minds. The stunning granite cliffs combined with the green landscape made a remarkable sight. It was perfect for a park.
So they added paths lighting and seating. The public loved it. People started calling it Little Guilin. The rock formations are strikingly similar to those in Guilin China. It’s a breathtaking natural wonder a tranquil oasis in Singapore.
Even today there are remnants of the quarry’s past. You can see it in the towering granite rock formations. They’re a dramatic backdrop for photos. You might even spot some wildlife. Terrapins and migratory birds are known to live here.
This is a place for relaxation. It’s ideal for picnics jogging or simply enjoying the scenery. It’s a testament to how nature can reclaim and even enhance our surroundings. It’s a truly memorable spot at Bukit Batok Town Park. The lake the rocks the history. It’s all here at Emerald Lake.
