Did you know that Rue Gasparin is named after Adrien de Gasparin? He was an esteemed agronomist and politician. Adrien de Gasparin was born in 1783 and died in 1862. His contributions earned him this lasting tribute.
At the corner of Rue Gasparin stands Le Veilleur de pierre. This memorial honors five French Resistance fighters. They were tragically shot here on July 27 1944. Georges Salendre and Louis Thomas created this poignant tribute.
Notice the unique architectural details. The buildings from numbers 15 to 23 share many features. They have the same height and window shapes. Yet each building boasts unique secondary decor. Look at the different door entrances. Notice the varying balcony supports.
Etienne Journoud designed many buildings on Rue Gasparin. He worked with various entrepreneurs. Together they shaped the street’s distinctive character. The buildings at numbers 15 to 23 show subtle variations.
Originally, the street was part of the Jacobin convent, dating back to the 13th century. The church was demolished in 1816. Later the prefecture replaced it. It too was demolished in 1852. Rue Gasparin emerged around 1863.
In 1873 Anselme Petetin was brought to the Hotel du Globe located on Rue Gasparin. He died there after suffering a stroke. Petetin was a journalist who opposed Gasparin.
Today Rue Gasparin is known for its premium shops. Fashion accessories and beauty boutiques line the street. It is part of Lyon’s golden shopping triangle. Upscale brands have replaced independent shops.
Take a moment to appreciate the building details. Admire the heads at number 13. Gaze upon the winged lion at number 20. This facade is the most richly decorated. Find the swan knocker at number 12.
