Have you ever heard of a village that still feels like the Middle Ages? That’s Farnborough, just south of Locksbottom. This village, with its old-fashioned houses, the lovely High Street, and the beautiful St Giles’ Church, is a place where you can almost feel the echoes of centuries past. The name Farnborough comes from the Old English, meaning a village among the ferns on the hill. The history of the village started in the 9th century when the King of Wessex gave away 950 acres. The village wasn’t included in the Domesday Book, but the manor existed in the Middle Ages and was owned by Simon de Montfort in the 13th century. The village evolved from the road going from London to Hastings which once went through Church Road and Old Hill. The George pub, which you can see right here, was built as a coaching inn in the 16th century. The horses and drivers stayed here, and it remained a place for travellers until 1936 when it was demolished and rebuilt. Today, Farnborough is still filled with history, but it’s also a vibrant, bustling place with a community spirit that shines. You’ll notice there’s a quiet but friendly atmosphere. Locals gather around the village hall, enjoying afternoon tea and sharing stories. And although Farnborough is just a short distance from London, it offers something special: a chance to escape the hustle and bustle and find a little peace and quiet.
