Battling floods. That is what Jakarta has been doing for centuries. Right here, we are standing in front of the West Flood Canal. This impressive canal plays a vital role in protecting Jakarta from devastating floods.
The West Flood Canal sometimes erroneously spelled Banjir Kanal Barat is more than just a waterway. It represents Jakarta’s resilience and its ongoing battle against the forces of nature. Let’s dive into the story of how this canal came to be.
A major flood struck Jakarta on February 13, 1918. The Dutch East Indian Department recognized the urgent need for a solution. Hendrik van Breen, an engineer, designed the first flood control channel. This was the beginning of the Jakarta Flood Canal project.
In December 1973, the “Master Plan for Drainage and Flood Control of Jakarta” was published. Netherlands Engineering Consultants helped create this plan. The plan focused on two canals encircling the city. These canals would divert water from the south around the city and into the sea. Thus, the West Flood Canal and the East Flood Canal were born. Other measures included reservoirs and pumps in low-lying areas. This system was built in 1983.
The West Flood Canal marks the southern boundary of the Menteng residential area. It was included in the 1918 Batavia city plan and constructed in 1919. The canal runs from the floodgate in Manggarai to Muara Angke. It passes through Pasar Rumput, Dukuh Atas, Karet Kubur, Tanah Abang, Tomang, Grogol and Pademangan. Another floodgate is located in Karet.
Look closely at the Manggarai floodgate. You’ll spot a bronze plaque honoring Van Breen. It commemorates the canal’s first use in diverting the flood of 1919.
The 1973 master plan envisioned a system of canals cutting the flow of water in West Jakarta. This was a continuation of Van Breen’s original canal. The construction faced delays due to the densely populated areas. After a flood in January 1979, the plan was revised. The central and provincial governments collaborated on the Cengkareng drainage system. This addition further enhanced the West Flood Canal’s effectiveness.
