Behold La Mujer a vibrant mosaic mural. It stands as a testament to strong Latina leaders. This artwork is a permanent outdoor installation at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center or ESB MACC. The La Mujer Mural is located right at the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail.
La Mujer was inaugurated in April 2023. The ESB MACC’s Caminos teen leadership program created this mural. Local muralist J Muzacz and Caminos coordinator Frederico Geib guided them. The mural represents the MACC community. It was designed and created tile by tile.
The La Mujer Mural depicts strong Latina leaders. These women inspired the teens to reach their potential. Selena Quintanilla is featured. Dolores Huerta and Emma Barrientos are also depicted. The mural celebrates their courage and success. They were trailblazers in art music and dance. They also served as activists mothers and community leaders.
From 2019 to 2022 the glass and ceramic mosaic mural came to life. It measures 6ft x 24ft x 8in. The Caminos program’s LatinX teen interns worked as muralists. They gained a crash course in mosaic making. They developed the concept and imagery.
The team chose La Mujer as the title. They wanted to revere preserve and celebrate strong Hispanic women. The focus was on recent history the Austin locale and the arts. Cultural themes are woven throughout. Monarch butterflies and marigold flowers add to the beauty.
All project stages involved the team. Concept design layout and fabrication were collaborative. J Muzacz was the lead artist. Twelve to fifteen interns and community volunteers helped. They worked every Saturday for six months. Pandemic delays occurred. La Mujer was finally installed in late 2022.
The ESB MACC celebrates women and community allies at La Mujer. The annual La Mujer event celebrates women in Austin’s Mexican American and Latina communities. Free workshops and activities are offered. They focus on wellness women in justice and know-your-rights. All-local visual and performing arts groups participate.
The La Mujer mosaic mural stands at 600 River Street. It marks the southeast edge of the ESB MACC. The mural can be easily viewed from the trail. The ESB MACC building is currently closed. It is undergoing Phase 2 of the 2018 Facility Expansion Plan. The anticipated opening is Fall 2025.
The Caminos Teens also created the Pocket Park Mural Project. They visited the Blanton Museum. They learned about Latino artists. The teens are painting murals on the benches. This is their first public art project of 2025.
The ESB MACC’s Caminos program empowers Austin-area teens. It helps them carve their own path in the creative arts. They become ambassadors of Latinx culture in Austin. They receive professional development and empowerment.
