Thorne held important roles. He chaired the Ponsonby Road Board. He was a member of the Auckland Harbour Board. Thorne also served as a trustee for local charities and sports clubs. Like many businessmen, Thorne had a North Shore holiday home. It was a summer retreat.
Thorne’s Takapuna property was expansive. It was first known as Thorne’s Paddock. Later, it was called Minnehaha. The house had four bedrooms, a drawing room, and a dining room. It also featured a kitchen and an office. The large entry hall added to its grandeur. Stables, a carriage house, and outhouses supported the main house. Thorne enjoyed buggy rides and boat trips.
