An artificial lake was created. A pumphouse with a steam engine pumped water to reservoirs supplying Auckland. This incredible beam engine is still in working order today at MOTAT a museum nearby. The water supply was eventually replaced by dams in the Waitakere Ranges but the legacy of Western Springs remains.
