Have you ever felt the cool dampness of ancient volcanic springs? Western Springs Lakeside Park in Auckland is a place where history and nature intertwine. This beautiful park wasn’t always so idyllic. It was once a swampy area known to the Maori as Te Wai Orea the waters of eels. They valued its clean spring water and the abundance of eels. Legend speaks of Ruarangi a chief of the Patupaiarehe people escaping through lava tunnels emerging at Te Wai Orea.

Western Springs Park holds a special place in Auckland’s history. It was once the city’s primary water source. In the 1870s a Scottish settler William Motion’s mill and land were purchased. An artificial lake was created. A pumphouse with a steam engine pumped water to reservoirs supplying Auckland. This incredible beam engine is still in working order today at MOTAT a museum nearby. The water supply was eventually replaced by dams in the Waitakere Ranges but the legacy of Western Springs remains.

Imagine the bustling activity of construction workers. They removed thousands of cartloads of spoil transforming the swamp into a lake capable of holding millions of gallons of water. They dug a deep engine pond and a long tunnel connecting the lake to the pumphouse. This was a massive undertaking transforming the landscape and the life of Auckland.

Today Western Springs Lakeside Park is a haven for wildlife. Native eels still thrive in the lake alongside ducks swans and other waterfowl. The park is a sanctuary for both people and nature. Visitors enjoy walking or cycling around the lake spotting the eels and birds. The park’s Maori name Te Wai Orea still speaks to the area’s historical significance. The Fukuoka Garden a beautiful Japanese garden adds another layer to this rich tapestry of culture and nature.

Western Springs Lakeside Park is more than just a park. It’s a living testament to Auckland’s past a place where history nature and community come together. It’s a place of legends a place of transformation and a place of remarkable beauty. Take a stroll around the lake. Appreciate the rich history and the abundant wildlife. Let the tranquil atmosphere wash over you.
