Did you ever hear of a cemetery located behind a church, across a field? Welcome to Waiau Pa Cemetery. Waiau Pa Cemetery is tucked away in the tranquil countryside of Auckland, New Zealand. It’s a place where history whispers through the weathered headstones, where stories of lives lived unfold. The cemetery is located behind the Waiau Pa Family Church. A large grass field separates the church from the cemetery grounds. You’ll find the entrance to the cemetery about 100 meters from the field’s gate. The cemetery is fully fenced and well-maintained. Waiau Pa Cemetery isn’t just a place of rest. It’s a living archive. It chronicles the lives of the community members from early settlers to more recent times. While you wander among the rows of headstones, you might notice an ash burial row along the southern boundary, a modern addition to this historic site. Look for the headstone of Joseph Clark, located in Row A, Plot 11. He was the first person laid to rest in Waiau Pa Cemetery, on March 7, 1919. Even in 2021, the cemetery was still active, welcoming both traditional burials and ash interments. The stories continue to be written here, amidst the quiet serenity of Waiau Pa.
