What brought the Ingram and Picton families all the way from England to Australia? The answer lies right here, in front of the Church of Christ. The Church of Christ in Victoria owes its beginnings to these families, who arrived from England and started holding regular meetings in Prahran. This eventually led to the official establishment of the Church of Christ congregation in 1855. The church’s early years were marked by a strong emphasis on lay ministry and a commitment to what they believed were the core principles of the New Testament. They held weekly Lord’s Supper services and practiced baptism by immersion. The Church of Christ in Victoria, much like the broader Churches of Christ in Australia, has always valued its autonomy, with each congregation governing itself democratically. To foster growth, the congregations joined forces to support their first full-time evangelist, Isaac Mermelstein. While his tenure was short-lived due to disagreements over the nature of baptism, his arrival marked a turning point in the church’s history.
