In 1943, Rue Marcel Allégot quietly observed the activities of the CNRS in Bellevue, Meudon. Today, we stand on this same street, a place echoing with the life of Marcel Allégot, a man whose story intertwines with the history of France. Rue Marcel Allégot wasn’t always its name. Originally part of the Grande Rue, the heart of Bellevue with its bustling cafes and shops, it was renamed in 1945 to honor a local hero. Marcel Allégot worked as an adjuster at the Renault factories. He was also a communist militant. In 1940, he was placed under forced residence. He disappeared from his home on Grande Rue, later Rue Marcel Allégot, only to be arrested in 1941. Accused of attempting to reconstitute the dissolved communist party, he was sentenced to eight years of forced labor. He was imprisoned in various locations, including Sainte, Fresnes, Caen, Fontevraud, Blois, and Compiègne. In 1944, he was deported to Mauthausen concentration camp. He was later transferred to Passau, Flossenbürg, and finally Zschachwitz, working for MIAG Muehlen-Industrie AG. Repatriated to Paris in June 1945, Marcel Allégot tragically succumbed to his ordeal just a few weeks later. The renaming of Grande Rue to Rue Marcel Allégot was a tribute to his resistance and sacrifice during a tumultuous period in French history. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and courage of ordinary individuals in extraordinary circumstances.
