Hidden within Chicago’s bustling Austin neighborhood lies Austin Community Academy High School. A place that has witnessed the ebb and flow of history, the rise and fall of dreams. Austin Community Academy first opened its doors in 1876. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of education. The school was named after Henry W. Austin, a prominent Chicago real estate developer, whose vision shaped the community. Austin Community Academy wasn’t always known by its current name. It was once Austin High School, a name etched in the memories of generations. The school even housed two smaller schools within its walls: Austin Business & Entrepreneurship Academy High and V.O.I.S.E. Academy High School. After 2016, these smaller schools merged, giving rise to the Austin College and Career Academy High School. The history of Austin Community Academy is a story of resilience. In the mid-20th century, the school was a beacon of academic excellence, renowned throughout Chicago. However, like many urban schools, Austin High faced its share of challenges. Declining test scores, low attendance, and student violence led to its phasing out in 2003. The final graduation ceremony took place in 2007, marking a poignant chapter in the school’s history. But the story doesn’t end there. Through the Renaissance 2010 program, the school was reborn. The campus was transformed into three smaller academies, each with a unique focus. These academies shared a common athletic program, their teams proudly bearing the name “Tigers.” Today, Austin Community Academy High School continues its mission of empowering students. It strives to provide a quality education that prepares them for the future. This school is more than just bricks and mortar.
