“A surveyor’s rough corduroy construction, can you imagine?” Now that’s how our story of Burnt Bridge begins. We’re standing in Ringwood East, a suburb of Melbourne. Burnt Bridge isn’t a literal burnt bridge anymore, but a neighborhood. Its name echoes a time when travel was a bit more rugged. In 1857, a surveyor built a makeshift corduroy road – logs laid side-by-side – across a swampy area on the track from Melbourne to Healesville and Gippsland. This rough-and-ready bridge earned the name “Burnt Bridge,” and eventually, a hotel sprung up nearby, solidifying the name. The Burnt Bridge Hotel existed as early as the 1840s, run by Elizabeth Moore and Lucy Dawson. It sat along the Lilydale Trail, close to where Maroondah Highway, Old Lilydale Road, and Beaufort Roads now meet. Back then, this area was primarily grazing land. These early hotels often started as humble shanties, offering coffee to passing coaches before eventually acquiring liquor licenses. There’s some debate about the name. Some believe it comes from the Scottish word “burn,” meaning stream. However, the more popular story links it to that canvas toll bridge that was, you guessed it, burnt down. Locals also had a nickname for the Burnt Bridge Hotel – “The Blazing Stump.” Today, Burnt Bridge is a bustling shopping precinct, serving residents from both sides of Maroondah Highway and even those as far as Mount Dandenong Road. You’ll find a post office, a pharmacy, a supermarket, bakeries, cafes, and takeaway shops. The spirit of that rough corduroy construction might be gone, but the name Burnt Bridge remains, a testament to the area’s humble and rugged beginnings.
