Recall the echoes of a colossal clash right here. We stand before Apelstein 32. It is a silent witness to one of history’s most decisive battles.

Apelstein 32 marks a position in the Battle of Leipzig. This battle was also known as the Battle of the Nations. It raged from October 16 to 19 in 1813. The monument commemorates the armies of the Coalition. Guido Theodor Apel designed and founded these memorials.

Look closely at Apelstein 32. Notice the inscriptions. One side honors General Barclay de Tolly. It notes his II Colonne with 50000 men. The other side marks the Battle of Leipzig on October 18 1813.

The Battle of Leipzig saw Napoleon’s French army face a coalition. The coalition included Russia Prussia Austria and Sweden. It was a decisive victory for the coalition forces. Almost 600000 soldiers fought here. It was the largest European battle before World War I.

Imagine the chaos and carnage. The Battle of Leipzig was one of the bloodiest of the Napoleonic Wars. The French suffered 45000 killed or wounded. They also had 36000 captured. The coalition lost 54000 men.

Consider the aftermath. The wounded and dead were too many to care for. Typhus and cholera spread quickly. Leipzig became a hotbed of disease. The diseases then swept through Germany and Europe.

Apelstein 32 is one of 50 such memorials. These Apelsteine dot the landscape around Leipzig. Theodor Apel a Leipzig citizen and writer initiated them. He erected 44 markers between 1861 and 1864. Others were added later by private individuals.

Originally the Apelsteine were sandstone pillars. They stood about 1.5 meters high. Stones marked coalition positions. These had a pointed top like an inverted V. Stones for Napoleon’s troops had a round top.

Inscriptions faced the battlefield. They listed the battle name and date. The other side showed commanders troop names and strength. Arrows on the sides showed the front line. Compass directions marked the tops. Even numbers up to 42 were for coalition troops. Odd numbers were for Napoleon’s forces.

Time has taken its toll. The sandstone wasn’t durable. Construction also encroached on the sites. Many Apelsteine have been replaced. Copies exist made of harder materials. Some vary in size and shape. Text errors even crept in during copying.

Apelstein 32 stands near the Monarchenhügel in Liebertwolkwitz. It is a lasting reminder of the battle’s scale and significance. This stele is a tribute to the many who fought and died here. It helps us remember a pivotal moment in European history.
