Did the aroma of freshly baked bread ever lead you to a church? In the heart of Mayfair, the magnificent St. Mark’s Church stands as a testament to a unique transformation. St. Mark’s Church, once a place of Anglican worship, now tantalizes the senses with the smells of a bustling food market. This Grade I-listed building, originally designed by John Peter Gandy, first opened its doors between 1825 and 1828. Constructed in the Greek Revival style, its imposing façade and elegant porch have long been admired as some of London’s finest. The church’s interior, however, tells a different story. In 1878, architect Arthur Blomfield reimagined the space, adding a Romanesque open roof structure and rich Victorian detail. This blend of Georgian and Victorian elements gives St. Mark’s its unique character. St. Mark’s has witnessed history unfold, including the wedding of George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood, in 1949. During World War II, its proximity to the US Embassy earned it the nickname “The American Church in London,” hosting figures like President Eisenhower and Eleanor Roosevelt. Deconsecrated in 1974, the building faced a period of decline, even appearing on English Heritage’s “Buildings at Risk” register. Yet, its story didn’t end there. Today, St. Mark’s thrives as Mercato Mayfair, a vibrant cultural hub and community market. The building has been meticulously restored, its stained glass windows, polychromatic brickwork, and mosaics gleaming anew. The crypt, once holding coffins secured by mortuary locks, has been reimagined as a wine cellar and microbrewery. The air, once filled with hymns, now carries the tantalizing aromas of diverse cuisines. St. Mark’s Church stands as a symbol of adaptation and community, offering a delightful blend of history, architecture, and culinary delights.
