Could a school rise again, like a phoenix from ashes? Pei Hwa Secondary School stands as a testament to such a rebirth. Here at 21 Fernvale Link, this vibrant school pulsates with life. But its story begins much earlier, in 1934. Originally known as Pei Hwa Public School, it was founded along Yio Chu Kang Road by Ang Gong Pin, a visionary who saw the need for education within the local villages. Imagine a time when attending city schools was a luxury few could afford. Pei Hwa Public School offered a beacon of hope. It started with just 17 classrooms and a simple dormitory. In 1935, the community rallied together, raising funds for additional classrooms, an office, and more dormitories. The official registration as Pei Hwa Public School came in 1936. The Japanese Occupation forced its closure, a dark period in its history. Yet, in 1945, Pei Hwa Public School reopened its doors. It took two years to repair the damage and rebuild what was lost. The school thrived through the late 1940s and 50s. A new campus was built on Yio Chu Kang Road, complete with twelve classrooms, a library, and even a canteen. Pei Hwa became a government-aided school in 1955. Further expansions included an assembly hall. The school embraced modernity, adding English streams and pre-primary education. It became a hub of learning, a source of pride for the community. However, the late 1980s brought a new challenge. Surrounding villages were relocated, leading to declining enrollment. Despite efforts to revitalize the school, Pei Hwa Public School closed its doors in 1990. The story doesn’t end there. The spirit of Pei Hwa lived on in the hearts of its alumni. The Pei Hwa Foundation, a testament to this enduring spirit, spearheaded the school’s resurrection. In 2005, Pei Hwa Secondary School was reborn at its current location in Fernvale Link. Pei Hwa Secondary School carries the torch of its predecessor. It continues to nurture talents, embracing innovation while honoring its rich history. The school stands as a symbol of resilience. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity, education can flourish, and communities can rebuild stronger than before.
