How about a journey to a place where the beach whispers secrets of the sea? That place is Leme. Leme is a special neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. It sits quietly at the northern end of Copacabana.

Leme means rudder in Portuguese. The name comes from a rock formation nearby. This rock looks like the rudder of a ship.

Leme Beach is much calmer than Copacabana. It’s mostly a residential area. Imagine yourself here as the sun dips low. The view of the sunset from Leme is simply beautiful.

Let’s talk about Morro do Leme. This beautiful hill sits at the end of Copacabana beach. It is also known as Leme. Over time, the Morro has been reforested. It now has 11000 types of plants. Ninety animal species also call it home. Walk along the cobblestone road through this forest. You might see Sagui monkeys playing.

At the foot of the hill stands Forte do Leme. It was built between 1913 and 1919. Today, the fort is a cultural center run by the army. Visit the arms exhibit to see 20th-century German Krupp howitzers. These are large swivel cannons.

Fisherman’s Path circles part of Morro do Leme. From here, you can take amazing pictures. The horse-shoe shape of Copacabana beach is perfect for photos.

Leme Fort, officially called Duque de Caxias Fort since 1935, is one of Rio’s oldest military fortresses. It sits within the Environmental Protection Area of Leme. This is at the east end of Copacabana Beach.

A winding path leads to the top of Morro de Leme. The path is 800 meters long. As you walk, you’ll pass through a lush forest. The fort has been an important surveillance point since the 18th century. It offers excellent views of Guanabara Bay.

The original fort was built between 1776 and 1779. It was called Fuerte do Vigia. Its main job was surveillance. In 1823, Brazil declared independence. Artillery was added to the fort to defend the city. This was against the Portuguese army. In 1913, after improvements, Leme Fort was officially established. It stood on the remains of the old Fuerte do Vigia.

Leme Fort has played a role in many historical events. These include the Revolt of the 18 of Copacabana Fort, the Revolution of 1932, and the communist uprising of 1935.

The cobbled road to the top of Morro de Leme is steep but manageable. It takes about 30 minutes to walk. Large trees provide shade along the way. Look closely to see families of marmosets. They feed on small fruits. You might also spot birds, butterflies, and lizards. A Via Crucis with images is placed along the path.

At Leme Fort, you can explore the bunker, large cannons, and ammunition store. But the best part might be the protected natural area. The views from above are stunning. You can see the entrance to Guanabara Bay, Sugar Loaf, and Niteroi. On the other side, there’s Copacabana beach.

Did you know that the bells of Leme Fort play parts of popular songs? They even play the famous “Brazil” song.

Leme didn’t become popular until the late 19th century. Farms were still nearby around 1915. High-rise hotels and buildings were constructed in the 1950s and 60s. Recently, it has become a favorite spot for watching New Year’s Eve fireworks.

So, as you stand here in Leme, remember its history. Think of the battles fought and the peaceful sunsets watched. Leme is more than just a beach. It’s a place where history and nature meet.
