“A church built by the grit of women,” the tour guide chuckled, gesturing towards the Celebration Baptist Church. You might be surprised to learn that Celebration Baptist Church owes its very existence to the determination of women. Back in the 1870s, Dallas was still finding its feet, a rough-and-tumble frontier town. Two Baptist churches had already come and gone. A third had hightailed it to the quieter pastures near White Rock Lake. When the first pastor of Celebration Baptist Church, a fiery preacher named W.W. Harris, left to spread the gospel further afield, things looked bleak. It was then that a woman named Lucinda Williams stepped up. She took it upon herself to rally the women of the congregation, declaring that they would not let their fledgling church fail. They rolled up their sleeves and got to work, raising the phenomenal sum of $500 through sheer hard work and determination. That, my friends, was enough to lay the foundation for their very first church building. The men, spurred on by the women’s efforts, then took charge of raising the rest of the funds needed. The result? This very church, a testament to the power of faith and the unwavering spirit of those pioneering women.
