Ever imagine a church built in a pub? The Catholic Church of Corpus Christi, Collier Row has a fascinating history. Let’s start our journey right here, in front of this beautiful structure. The Catholic Church of Corpus Christi holds a special place in the hearts of Collier Row residents. Its history is deeply intertwined with the growth of the community. Our story begins in 1938. Mass was first celebrated in Collier Row at the British Legion Hall. The officiant was Canon Martin Horkan, then an assistant priest at St Edward’s, Romford. During World War II, the hall was needed by the army. So, Mass was moved to a rather unusual location: the Bell and Gate Public House. Can you picture it? The Catholic Church of Corpus Christi’s journey to its current home was a testament to the community’s devotion. In 1952, Bishop Beck approved the construction of a Parish Hall on Lowshoe Lane. The first Mass was held there on May 10, 1953. The hall became a multifunctional space. It served as a church, a school, and a social center. The Catholic Church of Corpus Christi community finally had a dedicated space. Bishop Beck officially opened the hall on December 14, 1953. The very next day, Collier Row became an independent parish. Father Michael Hopkins was appointed its first parish priest. He oversaw the construction of the presbytery, the school, and finally, the church we stand before today. The foundation stone of the Catholic Church of Corpus Christi was laid on December 6, 1964. The ceremony was led by the then Bishop of Brentwood, Bernard Patrick Wall. The church was officially opened on November 28, 1965. It was designed in a modern interpretation of Italian Romanesque architecture. The church was consecrated by Bishop Patrick Casey on December 6, 1979. This marked an important milestone in the Catholic Church of Corpus Christi’s history. From a pub to a purpose-built structure, the church’s journey reflects the dedication and perseverance of the Collier Row community.
