Here we are at Homai School. Isn’t it amazing to stand where so much history has unfolded?

Homai School has been a cornerstone of this community since 1955. It began as Manurewa North School. The name later changed to Browns Road School before finally becoming Homai School.

Let’s step back to the 1950s. Manurewa was booming. Manurewa Central School was struggling to accommodate all the children. New schools were needed and Homai School was the third. St Anne’s Catholic School was also built to meet the demand.

The Education Board began planning Homai School in 1951. They chose a site on Browns Road. It was once the farm of H. T. and J. J. Smyth. Homai School opened in April 1955. It had six classrooms.

In 1960, Manurewa High School was built next to Homai School. To mark the boundary, a row of trees was planted. These trees created a clear division between the primary and secondary school grounds.

Homai School continues to thrive. In November 2024, the school roll was 416 students. Christina Patea is the dedicated principal. She leads Homai School with passion. Homai School provides education for years 1 through 6. It is a state co-educational school. The Ministry of Education institution number is 1317.

Homai is more than just a school. It is a vital part of the Homai suburb. Homai itself is a suburb of Auckland. It sits within the Manurewa area.

Did you know the name Homai has Maori origins? “Homai” is a Maori word meaning “to give to me”. This reflects the spirit of the community that built this school.

Homai School stands as a testament to community growth. It represents the commitment to education. From its humble beginnings as Manurewa North School, Homai School has grown. It now plays a crucial role in shaping young minds. The school’s journey reflects the suburb’s own evolution. It is an important landmark in Homai’s story.
