Gazing down Rue Édouard Vaillant, one might wonder about the name. Who was this Édouard Vaillant? Rue Édouard Vaillant in Paris’s 16th arrondissement is more than just a street. It’s a quiet reminder of a turbulent life, a testament to Édouard Vaillant, the French revolutionary and politician. Born in 1840, Vaillant wasn’t born into revolution. He trained as an engineer and later studied medicine in various European cities. However, the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War ignited his revolutionary spirit. He became a disciple of the socialist Auguste Blanqui. He wrote fiery articles, echoing Blanqui’s ideals.

Vaillant’s fervor led him to participate in the Paris Commune of 1871. This revolutionary government briefly held control of Paris. He was elected a member of the Commune. The Commune’s defeat forced Vaillant into exile in England. There he met Karl Marx and became a member of the First International. He eventually withdrew, finding the group not revolutionary enough for his tastes. Condemned to death in his absence, Vaillant returned to France only after being granted amnesty in 1880. He remained politically active, serving as a municipal councillor and later representing Paris in the National Assembly from 1893 until his death in 1915.

Rue Édouard Vaillant stretches for 300 meters and is 12 meters wide. It begins at Avenue Georges-Lafont and ends at Avenue de la Porte-de-Saint-Cloud. This street was once part of Route Nationale 10, originally located in Boulogne-Billancourt before being annexed to Paris. Interestingly, there is also an Avenue Édouard Vaillant in Boulogne-Billancourt. This avenue was the first street in Boulogne to have electric lighting installed, a small but significant marker of progress. The creation of the Boulevard Périphérique in 1970 resulted in alterations to Rue Édouard Vaillant. Today, Rue Édouard Vaillant stands as a tranquil thoroughfare. It whispers of a man who dedicated his life to social change.
