Have you ever imagined a place where history and industry intertwine? Welcome to Übigau a unique Dresden suburb. Übigau boasts a rich past. Its story begins long ago in 1324 when it was first mentioned as Vbegowe a Slavic name. The name’s origin remains uncertain. Some believe it means refuge reflecting Übigau’s elevated position offering protection from Elbe River floods.
For centuries Übigau belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Meißen. Later it fell under Stolpen’s rule then Dresden’s. In 1903 Übigau officially became part of Dresden. Übigau’s most prominent landmark is its baroque Schloss Übigau castle. Built between 1724 and 1726 by Field Marshal Count Flemming it was later acquired by Augustus the Strong. The castle’s design by Johann Friedrich Eosander von Goethe is breathtaking. Seven of its nine axes open into elegant loggias overlooking the Elbe. It almost feels Venetian.
Übigau’s industrial legacy is equally fascinating. The Maschinenbauanstalt Übigau machine factory was located nearby. Here Johann Andreas Schubert designed and built the first Saxon passenger steamer Königin Maria. More importantly he created the Saxonia Germany’s first functional steam locomotive. This locomotive played a significant role in Saxony’s railway development. The Übigau shipyard also flourished. The Kette shipyard took over in 1877 becoming one of Europe’s leading inland shipyards. The shipyard’s massive 45-ton crane remains as a testament to its past.
Übigau’s history is marked by both grandeur and hardship. During the Napoleonic Wars the castle suffered looting and damage. The subsequent years saw various owners and uses for Schloss Übigau. It served as the headquarters for the Maschinenbauanstalt. Later it housed the Kette shipyard. In the 1930s it was briefly known as the Red Castle due to its association with communist organizations. During the DDR era it housed the VEB Dampfkesselbau. After German reunification Schloss Übigau stood empty. Various plans for its restoration have been proposed but it remains largely unused. The castle and its surroundings are a tangible reminder of Übigau’s diverse and dramatic past. Übigau awaits its next chapter. A place where the echoes of history intertwine with the hum of industry.
