Hidden amidst the vibrant energy of Shanghai, Xilin Chan Temple offers a tranquil escape. Xilin Chan Temple’s story begins in 872. During the Tang Dynasty, a man named Hu Zengchu established a place called “Xilin Vihara”. This marked the beginning of Xilin Chan Temple. The temple has weathered storms, both literal and figurative, throughout its long history. During the Mongolian invasion of the 13th century, the temple was destroyed by fire. It was later restored in 1387 during the Ming Dynasty. The name even changed a few times. It was known as “Jiedai Temple” during the Southern Song Dynasty. Later, it became “Ting’en Temple”, then “Chong’en Temple”. Finally, in the mid-15th century, Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty bestowed the name “Xilin Chan Temple of Great Ming.” More recently, neglect during the Republic of China era and further devastation during the Cultural Revolution left the temple in ruins. However, the temple experienced a revival after the 3rd Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. Restoration efforts began. The modern temple we see today was reconstructed between 1986 and 2003. At the heart of Xilin Chan Temple stands the magnificent seven-story Yuanying Pagoda. This 46.5-meter tall octagonal structure is the tallest pagoda in Shanghai. It’s made of brick and stone and is a tribute to Chan master Yuanying. The pagoda holds secrets within its walls. During restoration, workers discovered a treasure trove of artifacts. Ancient coins, golden Buddha statues, and relics of gold, silver, and jade revealed glimpses into the temple’s rich past. Xilin Chan Temple is more than just a temple. It’s a living testament to resilience. It stands as a beacon of peace and spirituality amidst the bustling metropolis of Shanghai.
