Can you imagine pulling a wooden bridge over a flowing river, simply on wheels? This is the incredible story of the Reichenbachbrücke, right here in Munich. This gracefully arched bridge spans the Isar River, connecting the Isarvorstadt district on the left bank to the Au district on the right. The bridge is named after the Bavarian inventor and engineer Georg von Reichenbach, a man who was truly ahead of his time.

Originally, there was a wooden bridge built at this very spot but it was not adequate enough. In 1902, the decision was made to build a new bridge, so the old one had to be moved. Amazingly, the wooden bridge was rolled 25 meters south, right at this spot, on 14-centimeter-thick iron balls. This feat took only one hour and forty minutes. Can you imagine?

Today, the Reichenbachbrücke is a symbol of engineering ingenuity and a testament to the history of Munich. It links two vibrant districts, offers scenic views, and serves as a constant reminder of the city’s enduring spirit. While visiting the bridge, take a moment to imagine the incredible effort that went into its construction and marvel at how it has withstood the test of time.
