Was it vanity or ambition that drove the Freiherren von Dalberg to commission such a grand palace? Here we stand before the Jüngerer Dalberger Hof, a testament to the power and prestige of one of Mainz’s most prominent families. The Jüngerer Dalberger Hof, also known as the Neue Dalberger Hof, wasn’t the family’s first foray into palatial living. Their older residence, the Älterer Dalberger Hof, simply couldn’t keep up with their rising status. So, between 1715 and 1718, this magnificent baroque palace rose on the site of the former Brendel von Homburg residence. The architect, Johann Kaspar Herwarthel, designed a three-winged masterpiece surrounding a central courtyard. The main facade, facing Klarastraße, is dominated by a dramatic, almost church-like central projection. It’s as if the Dalbergs were blurring the lines between earthly and divine power. Originally, an inscription above the main portal read “Concordia fratrum erexit,” meaning “Built by the harmony of brothers.” This points to the fact that several Dalberg brothers jointly commissioned the Jüngerer Dalberger Hof. This explains, perhaps, the sheer scale of the project. Sadly, the opulent interiors, including ceiling frescoes by Giovanni Francesco Marchini, were lost to fire during the siege of Mainz in 1793. Over the years, the Jüngerer Dalberger Hof played many roles. It served as a courthouse, a prison, and even a music conservatory. During the Nazi era, it became a place of suffering. Thousands of political prisoners, Jews, Sinti, and Roma were held in its overcrowded cellars before being transported to concentration camps. A sobering reminder of this dark chapter is now marked by a memorial plaque in the foyer. Today, after extensive renovations and a shift to private ownership, the Jüngerer Dalberger Hof has been transformed into luxury apartments. It stands as a beautiful yet complex symbol of Mainz’s history, whispering stories of ambition, tragedy, and renewal.
