Sculpted in unwavering resolve, the Gróf Károlyi István Statue commands attention. Here, in Újpest’s main square, stands not just a statue but a living testament to the city’s founder. The Gróf Károlyi István Statue isn’t merely a bronze figure. It’s a symbol of vision and resilience. The statue itself is an impressive work, capturing Károlyi’s dignified presence. At the base, a golden inscription proclaims his name and a map marks Újpest’s founding. Gróf Károlyi István, born in 1797, was more than just a politician. He was a key figure in shaping Újpest’s destiny. He envisioned a thriving community, a refuge from the devastation of the 1838 flood. He offered incentives, attracting settlers to the Danube’s edge. In 1840, his vision materialized as Újpest. Károlyi championed Újpest’s industrial growth. He invited skilled craftsmen and manufacturers, fostering a vibrant economy. He meticulously planned the town’s architecture, emphasizing a modern, urban design. His stipulations for building materials and street layouts reflect his forward-thinking approach. The Gróf Károlyi István Statue also silently speaks of a man thrust into the turmoil of the 1848 revolution. A quiet, devout man known for his philanthropy, he trained the Fót national guard, donated horses to the defense forces, and even raised a regiment bearing his name. He accepted the role of Pest county’s chief administrator, a position he hadn’t previously sought. His patriotism led to his arrest in 1849. He was imprisoned alongside Prime Minister Batthyány Lajos, enduring trials and confinement. The statue, however, also bears witness to a more recent ordeal. In June 2019, the Gróf Károlyi István Statue was vandalized, defaced with silver paint. Thanks to surveillance cameras, the culprits were swiftly apprehended. The statue has since been restored, a symbol of Újpest’s enduring respect for its founder. Károlyi’s legacy extends beyond Újpest’s founding. He was a man of deep religious conviction, high culture, and unwavering patriotic sacrifice. His contributions were acknowledged even by Queen Elisabeth, who laid a wreath on his coffin. The Gróf Károlyi István Statue serves as a constant reminder of his enduring impact.
