“Did you ever hear of shoes made from goatskin?” I asked, watching the waves caress the sands of Caleta del Rio. This beach, on Fuerteventura, whispers tales of the island’s earliest inhabitants, the Mahos. They crafted these unique shoes, a tradition echoing from North Africa, their ancestral home. Caleta del Rio, a testament to time, has witnessed Fuerteventura’s story unfold, from these first settlers to the arrival of explorers and the rise of tourism. In the 11th century BC, Phoenicians marked Fuerteventura’s history. Later, in 1340, Spanish and Portuguese expeditions landed, unknowingly setting the stage for the island’s conquest. Caleta del Rio likely saw these ships on the horizon, their sails billowing against the “strong winds” that give Fuerteventura its name. Jean de Béthencourt and Gadifer de la Salle, French explorers, began their conquest in 1402. By 1405, Betancuria, Fuerteventura’s first capital, was established. While Caleta del Rio wasn’t the center of power, it remained a vital part of the island’s landscape. Pirates frequently targeted Fuerteventura during colonial times. Fortifications and lookouts arose along the coastline, a silent acknowledgment of the constant threat. Caleta del Rio, with its open shoreline, likely witnessed these tense times, the Mahos perhaps seeking refuge among its dunes. Military rule, a constant for centuries, finally dissolved in 1859. Puerto del Rosario became the new capital, marking a shift in Fuerteventura’s focus. The opening of El Matorral airport in the late 1960s signaled the start of Fuerteventura’s modern era. Tourism blossomed, transforming Caleta del Rio and other coastal areas into sought-after destinations. Today, Caleta del Rio remains a peaceful haven on Fuerteventura. Its sands hold the echoes of the Mahos, the whispers of explorers, and the dreams of modern travelers. As you stand here, at Caleta del Rio, feel the island’s history beneath your feet.
