“Who was Jules Vallès?” That’s probably what you’re wondering as we stand here on Rue Jules Vallès. This street in Marseille bears the name of a remarkable French figure. He was a journalist, author, and left-wing political activist.

Jules Vallès was born Jules Vallez in 1832. He was born in Le Puy-en-Velay. Throughout his life, Vallès championed libertarian and socialist ideas. He used his voice to advocate for the underdogs of society.

In 1883, Vallès successfully revived “Le Cri du Peuple.” This newspaper became a platform for his political beliefs. He used it to spread his libertarian and socialist ideas. Sadly, his health began to decline around the same time. He suffered from diabetes.

During a health crisis in 1884, Vallès was cared for by doctor Guebhard. He also received assistance from Guebhard’s secretary, Séverine. Knowing his end was near, he made arrangements for his legacy. Vallès appointed Hector Malot to execute his will.

Jules Vallès died on February 14, 1885, in Paris. He was 52 years old. His death marked the end of a life dedicated to social justice.

Vallès’ funeral was a major public event. About 60,000 people followed his coffin. The procession made its way to Père Lachaise Cemetery. This massive turnout shows the impact he had on the people of France.

Today, Rue Jules Vallès serves as a reminder of his contributions. It is a tribute to his unwavering commitment to his beliefs.
