Have you ever heard of a creek that bubbles? It’s right here, in Chicago. It’s known as Bubbly Creek, a name that conjures up images of a frothy, bubbly paradise. The reality, however, is a bit more sinister.

Bubbly Creek is actually a branch of the Chicago River, specifically the South Fork of the South Branch. It became notorious in the early 20th century, when the meatpacking industry set up shop on its banks. The Union Stock Yards would store livestock prior to butchering, and the creek was essentially their sewer. All the blood and entrails from millions of slaughtered animals were dumped directly into it.

This wasn’t just a messy practice, it was an environmental nightmare. The animal waste created methane gas, which bubbled up to the surface, giving the creek its name. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the water was practically thick with blood and offal. Upton Sinclair, in his famous book “The Jungle” described it as “a great open sewer”.

Bubbly Creek’s history is an example of the consequences of unbridled industrialization. Today, the creek is surrounded by a mixture of industrial warehouses and residential neighborhoods. You’ll see trees and houses facing the creek, and even rowing clubs taking advantage of the waterways. The Union Stock Yards were demolished in the 1970s, but the memory of its pollution lingers.

It’s a challenge, but there are efforts to restore this creek. The Army Corps of Engineers is working on a plan, but it has been stalled for years. The environmental damage done is quite severe, but people living around Bubbly Creek are optimistic about a future with cleaner waters. They care about the creek and hope to see it restored to a symbol of pride, not a scar of history.
