Wonder what it was like to travel in the 1950s? The Colony Motel offers a glimpse into that era. It stands as an authentic example of mid-century motel design.
The Colony Motel opened in Brookfield on September 1, 1957. Its grand opening was announced in the Citizen newspaper. The owners Frank Fikejs and his wife wanted to provide the ultimate in up-to-date accommodations. They sought to enhance the experience with a colonial atmosphere.
Early guests found clean simple lines on the exterior. Quaint lattice work added to the appeal. The attractively decorated rooms provided a welcome retreat. The Colony Motel offered 20 units including a bridal suite. Each room featured radiant heating and air conditioning. Carpeting covered the floors and Philippine mahogany paneled the walls. Adjoining ceramic tile showers offered built-in shelves.
Each Colony Motel unit had two full-size beds. A dresser-desk combination provided workspace. Two lounge chairs offered relaxation. Guests could enjoy a 21-inch television and a telephone. Individual room temperature controls added to the comfort. The Colony Motel also provided parking for 35 cars out front. The Fikejs family lived onsite in quarters at the front of the building.
Over the years the Colony Motel has seen few changes to its streetside appearance. Remodeling in 2005 increased the number of rooms to 36. Guests now enjoy free wireless internet. The neon Colony Motel sign remains unchanged since 1957. The absence of a Best Western sign indicates the motel is no longer part of that chain. The Carte Blanche card sign is also gone. The card company itself no longer exists.
Today the Colony Motel offers non-smoking rooms. Guests appreciate the free parking and free Wi-Fi. The motel provides facilities for disabled guests. Each room includes a private bathroom with a bathtub or shower. You will also find an alarm clock and cable channels.
Need something? A vending machine offers drinks. The 24-hour front desk is always available. The Colony Motel also provides fax and photocopying services. For safety the motel has fire extinguishers smoke alarms and CCTV outside.
The Colony Motel is a short drive from Chicago Midway International Airport. It is also near many attractions. Soldier Field home of the Chicago Bears is nearby. The motel is 2600 feet from the center of Brookfield.
The Colony Motel welcomes children of all ages. Guests must show a valid photo ID and credit card upon check-in. Special requests are subject to availability and extra charges. Guests must be 21 or older to check in. The Colony Motel continues to offer a comfortable and convenient stay. It blends vintage charm with modern amenities.
