The Methodist Episcopal Church of Mount Salem Cemetery plaque tells a story of resilience and faith. It stands tall, a testament to the spirit of a community that endured hardship and thrived against all odds. This plaque, unveiled in 2002, commemorates the Methodist Episcopal Church of Mount Salem Cemetery and the people it served.

The story of Mount Salem begins in the mid-19th century when James Corry Maxwell, known as J.C. Maxwell, arrived in Texas from Virginia. He brought with him around 25 enslaved people. After the Civil War, some left the area but others remained, becoming tenant farmers.

The freedmen sought solace and community, establishing a church and what was likely also a school in the same building. Newspaper mentions of the church and school, known as Mount Salem, appeared as early as 1877, indicating their importance in the community.

This plaque stands as a poignant reminder of Mount Salem Cemetery being purchased by the church’s trustees for a sanctuary and cemetery in 1882. It became a central point for religious, educational, and social activities for Walnut Creek. The original church building was lost to a fire in the mid-1930s.

The plaque also highlights the legacy of the Madison family, who farmed the land before emancipation. We know of the earliest headstones, one being that of Peter Elder, who died in 1872.

As you stand before this plaque, reflect on the legacy of Mount Salem and the stories whispered by these grounds. This cemetery, though heavily marked by time, stands as a testament to resilience and faith in the face of adversity.
