Step into the captivating world of the Carlton Cinema. Right here on Essex Road in Islington this magnificent building stands. Its story begins in 1930 a time of glamour and Art Deco dreams. The Carlton Cinema wasn’t just any cinema it was a cine-variety theatre. Imagine 2226 people crammed into its opulent interior.

Architect George Coles designed a stunning Egyptian style facade. Multi-coloured Hathernware tiles adorned the exterior. The recent discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb greatly influenced the Art Deco style popular at that time. The Carlton Cinema reflected this fascination with ancient Egypt. But the magic didn’t stop there.

Inside the building the style shifted. The foyer boasted Egyptian decorations. However the auditorium showcased a different style altogether a French Renaissance elegance. This stunning blend of styles made the Carlton truly unique.

Associated British Cinemas took over in 1935. The name changed to ABC in 1962. For many younger people the Carlton Cinema meant Saturday morning pictures. A cherished memory for countless Londoners. The building then became a Mecca Bingo Club a transformation that lasted for almost 35 years.

In 2007 the Mecca Bingo Club closed. The Carlton Cinema fell silent. But its story didn’t end there. Resurrection Manifestations an evangelical Christian church purchased it in 2013. They had plans. They wanted to partially reopen it as a cinema again.

In 2015 Gracepoint opened its doors. A 900 capacity venue available for hire. It also serves as an active church. The building’s unique history continues. Even now the facade and foyer of the Carlton Cinema appear on screen. They appeared in the TV series Endeavour as the Roxy Cinema a testament to its enduring cinematic charm. The Carlton Cinema’s legacy lives on a blend of history and faith. A reminder that even grand old buildings find new purposes. They continue to fascinate and captivate.
