A grand iron gate stands before us. This is the Odd Fellows Mansion. Its elegant facade hints at centuries of stories. This is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to Copenhagen’s rich history.

The Odd Fellows Mansion was not always called that. It began life in 1751 as the home of Count Christian August von Berckentin. A wealthy merchant and politician he commissioned the building. The renowned architect Johann Gottfried Rosenberg designed it under the supervision of Nicolai Eigtved. The building’s Rococo style reflects the elegant tastes of its first owner. Berckentin unfortunately only enjoyed his new home for three years before his death in 1758.

After Berckentin’s death his son-in-law briefly took possession. Then in 1762 Heinrich von Schimmelmann purchased the mansion. This marked the beginning of the Schimmelmann era. Heinrich von Schimmelmann was a powerful figure. He was a wealthy financier and even owned sugar refineries and plantations in the Caribbean. His son Ernst inherited the mansion in 1782. He and his wife Charlotte transformed it into a hub of cultural activity. Their famed salons hosted prominent figures. Think of poets like Jens Baggesen and Adam Oehlenschläger. Even the renowned scientist H.C. Ørsted received support from Charlotte. Her hospitality and patronage earned her the title “The Mother of Danish Poets”.

The mansion continued its vibrant history. It hosted various wealthy families. In the 19th century artist Rudolph Puggaard entertained Danish Golden Age artists there. Then the firm Bendixen & Lindhardt occupied the building. It has also appeared in film and television productions such as Smilla’s Sense of Snow and the TV series Matador.

In 1884 it became known as the Concertpalaiset. The building underwent significant expansion including a new concert hall. However tragedy struck in 1992. A devastating fire engulfed the building. The concert hall and much of the interior were destroyed. The fire left only the outer walls standing.

Miraculously the Odd Fellows Mansion was rebuilt. The Odd Fellow Order purchased the building in 1900. They restored the mansion and created lodge halls. Today it serves as a venue for events. While the concert hall was never rebuilt. The mansion retains its original garden.

Step inside the Odd Fellows Mansion. Imagine the elegant gatherings the vibrant salons the artistic collaborations. Feel the weight of history within these walls. A place that has witnessed Copenhagen’s transformation. It continues to thrive as a testament to resilience and the enduring power of culture.
