Vibrant murals, painted by artist Linda Oszajca, transform the space behind the circulation desk into an inviting cave and bring the ocean to life on the far wall. Kailua Public Library’s history is interwoven with the community it serves. The building itself, over fifty years old, has always been a library. However, it’s undergone significant renovations over time, including the addition of a peaceful courtyard with a water feature, perfect for enjoying a book in the fresh air. Attached to the Kailua Public Library is a treasure trove for book lovers: a bookstore run by the Friends of the Library Kailua. This large room is packed with books at incredible prices. Every purchase supports the library, contributing to new books, equipment, and furniture. The bookstore’s success has enabled upgrades, thanks in part to funding from the Castle Estate and the State of Hawai’i. Even the courtyard and reading room have benefited from the bookstore’s proceeds. Kailua Public Library pulsates with life, particularly on Saturdays. Previously, Kaneohe Library shared the weekend load. But with Kaneohe Library no longer open on Saturdays, Kailua Library has become the bustling heart of the Windward side’s literary scene. The Kailua Public Library is also known for its special visitors. Wally Amos, the famed cookie man and inspirational author, graces the library with monthly story times. And, if you’re lucky, you might even spot a cast member from the television show “LOST”. Apparently, Dominic Monaghan finds solace within these walls when the paparazzi become too intense. Kailua Public Library is more than a library. It’s a gateway to learning, a community gathering place, and a testament to the power of stories.
