Emerging from post-war Bonn, Pennenfeld stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. Once a landscape of fields and meadows, this area, a former branch of the Rhine, posed building challenges. Yet, the need for housing in the newly designated capital city spurred development in the early 1950s. Pennenfeld rapidly transformed, giving rise to residential areas like the VEBOWAG and HICOG settlements, schools, shops, sports facilities, and churches. Pennenfeld is bordered by Alt-Godesberg, Rüngsdorf, Lannesdorf, and Muffendorf, south of the Godesberg center. The HICOG (High Commissioner of Germany) settlement, built as a symbol of post-war reconstruction, became a protected landmark in 1996. Its architecture, designed by Sep Ruf, is notable for its open sightlines and integration with nature. The eleven-story high-rise on Röntgenstraße, one of the first residential towers in West Germany, provided 72 apartments. Pennenfeld became an educational hub with two Gymnasien, two Realschulen, a Grundschule, and a Hauptschule. The Sportpark Pennenfeld further enhanced the area, providing extensive sports facilities. Pennenfeld also fostered community initiatives. The “Wohnen im Pennenfeld – Zuhause im Pennenfeld” project, partnered with VEBOWAG, the city of Bonn, AWO, and Caritas, aims to improve living conditions and social structures. Two notable garden projects, “Naturinsel Pennenfeld” and “Piko-Park”, showcase sustainable community efforts. Piko-Park, situated between VEBOWAG residential buildings on Max-Planck-Straße and Frascatistraße, even received the “Zeitzeichen 2020” sustainability award. From fields to a thriving community, Pennenfeld embodies Bonn’s post-war growth and community spirit.
