What if I told you this Central Region of Singapore is more than just skyscrapers? It is a vibrant tapestry woven with history. This region is one of Singapore’s five regions. It serves as the main metropolitan area around the Central Area.

The Central Region covers 13,150 hectares. That is about 32,500 acres. It includes 11 planning areas within the Central Area. It also has 11 more outside of it. Many of Singapore’s national monuments call this region home.

Historically, this was where the city was founded. The country’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site resides here. The Singapore Botanic Gardens are 166 years old. These tropical gardens add to the region’s charm.

The Central Area is largely commercial. This is especially true in the Downtown Core. Yet, it also houses 335,400 residential units. These range from HDB flats to exclusive bungalows.

The Central Region boasts 1,000 hectares of green spaces. Parks, gardens, and recreational areas are linked by 19 km of park connectors. These were built to make the area aesthetically pleasing.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority considered existing strengths in its 2003 Master Plan. The Central Region is the core area for business and entertainment. It also holds historic districts and diverse housing. Numerous institutions for education thrive here. The region is well-connected by road and rail. It is also an international gateway via maritime ports.

The URA planned for more homes of various types. This was especially true in the Downtown Core. Supporting institutions and transport networks were upgraded. These catered to the rising resident population.

The New Downtown at Marina Bay extends the central business district. New business zones and white zones encourage land-use flexibility. Business and research activities were promoted. One-north and a medical park within Singapore General Hospital were created.

Park connectors were extended to new and existing parks for recreation. The Kallang Sports Hub was redeveloped. Building conservation continues to be enforced. Spaces for youth activities near Orchard Road were planned.

The Central Region sits on the southern part of Singapore Island. Its land area spans 132.7 km2. This is about 51.2 sq mi. It is the only region bordering all other regions. It also borders the Straits of Singapore to the south.

The Singapore River flows for 3.2 kilometers through the region. It starts at Kim Seng Bridge and empties into Marina Bay. Bukit Timah Hill is Singapore’s natural tallest point. It rises 163.63 metres above ground.

From bustling streets to serene gardens, the Central Region is multifaceted. Its blend of history, commerce, and nature makes it unique. As we conclude our exploration of the Central Region, remember its rich history. See how it shaped Singapore.
