Bethany United Methodist Church

Gazing at Bethany United Methodist Church, one might wonder about the stories held within its walls. Bethany United Methodist Church, established in 1895, stands as a testament to the faith and cultural bonds of German Evangelical immigrants. Initially gathering in a living room near the current location, then a storefront on Irving Park, the congregation’s growth led to the groundbreaking at Paulina and Cullom in 1920. The gymnasium and parsonage were constructed first, with the sanctuary completed in time for Christmas worship in 1930. Originally Bethany Evangelical, the church became Bethany United Church of Christ after the merger of Evangelical, Reform, and Congregational denominations in 1957. Within the sanctuary, plaques on the wall and pulpit commemorate past members and pastors. Each All Saints’ Day, roses adorn the altar in their memory. Bethany United Methodist Church also has a rich history of pastors and leaders. Pastor Vince Amlin, originally from Indiana and Ohio, is a graduate of New York University and the University of Chicago Divinity School. Ordained in the UCC in 2010, he served at the United Church of Gainesville, Florida, before returning to Chicago. Pastor Rebecca Anderson, ordained in The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), holds a Masters in Divinity from the University of Chicago and is active in the Chicago storytelling scene. Yasuko Oura serves as the Music Director, also teaching at Northwestern University and North Park University. Jurek Polanski holds the position of Sexton. Bethany United Methodist Church continues to be a vibrant part of the community, offering sermons, stories, and various programs.
