Opened in 1891 Blackshear Elementary School has a remarkable history to share. It stands as a testament to Austin’s commitment to education. This school began its journey providing free education to African-American children. At that time the surrounding area was known as Gregory Town.

Originally it was known as School No. 3. It was also called Gregory Town School and simply Gregory School. The name changed in 1936 to honor Edward L. Blackshear. He was a respected 19th-century teacher and principal. Blackshear left Austin in 1895. He became the head of Prairie View College.

Blackshear Elementary School is a recognized Texas Historical Site. It gained this recognition in 2001. The historical marker proudly displays marker number 12825.

Back then conditions at Blackshear were not always ideal. A 1933 report described the school as a firetrap. It noted the lack of resources. Despite these challenges, the staff remained dedicated.

A turning point came in 1936. The school moved from its original location on Olive Street to 11th Street. During that time Friendly R. Rice began working as assistant principal in 1931. He played a crucial role in the school’s transformation. Rice was known for his progressive ideas. He introduced innovative programs.

He partnered with social service agencies. Rice established a library. It was the first for a Black school in the Southwest. He also provided hot lunches for students.

Today Blackshear Elementary serves an ethnically diverse student body. It offers pre-kindergarten through fifth grade classes. The school is now known as Blackshear Fine Arts Academy. It enriches students’ lives through the arts.

Blackshear began offering expansive fine arts programming in 2014. It was the first elementary school in Austin to do so. The program includes Shakespeare studies. Students create full-length stage productions. They also receive instruction in music, visual art and storytelling.

Blackshear Elementary School stands as a symbol of progress. It reflects Austin’s dedication to providing quality education for all. From its humble beginnings to its current focus on the arts, Blackshear continues to shape young minds. It enriches the community. Its legacy lives on in the students who pass through its doors.
