Think about the excitement and relief washing over you. You have just arrived at Arrivals in Fuerteventura. This terminal is more than just a point of entry. It is a gateway to an island steeped in history and brimming with unique culture.

Fuerteventura’s story stretches back millennia. The island itself is over 20 million years old, born from volcanic eruptions. However, human settlement began much later. The Majos, believed to be of North African origin, first called this island home around the 5th century BC.

Imagine them living in harmony with the arid landscape. They developed their own customs and traditions, distinct from the rest of the world. Their legacy remains. It can be found in place names and local customs scattered across Fuerteventura.

Fast forward to the 15th century. European explorers arrived. Jean de Béthencourt established Betancuria in 1404. It became the first European settlement and the island’s capital. This marked a turning point. Fuerteventura began its transformation under Spanish influence.

Pirate attacks were frequent. Fortifications like the castle at Caleta de Fuste rose to defend the island. In 1924, the Spanish author Miguel de Unamuno was exiled to Fuerteventura. He criticized King Alfonso XII’s dictator. He only spent a few months on the remote island.

The original airport opened in 1964. Soon after, tourist hotels were built. This heralded the beginning of Fuerteventura’s tourist-based economy. In December 2009, the new facilities of Arrivals at Fuerteventura Airport were inaugurated. The space available tripled that of the old facilities.

As you step into Arrivals, consider the journey. You are walking in the footsteps of ancient Majos, European conquerors, and exiled intellectuals. Fuerteventura welcomes you with open arms. The island is ready to share its history, its culture, and its stunning landscapes. Enjoy your adventure.
