Standing before the imposing stone of St Cuthbert’s, a sense of history washes over you. This is a sanctuary that has witnessed centuries of Edinburgh’s life, a place where faith and community have intertwined for generations. Tucked away amongst the trees of Princes Street Gardens, St Cuthbert’s is a serene haven compared to the bustling energy of city life. This church has a rich history, its foundations said to be laid as far back as the 8th century, making it one of the oldest Christian sites in Edinburgh. The church was dedicated to Saint Cuthbert, a revered figure in Northumbria, who came from Melrose and might once have preached in the sheltered hollow beneath Edinburgh Castle.

Through the centuries, St Cuthbert’s has seen many changes. It was destroyed and rebuilt numerous times. Richard II’s attack in 1385 and the Earl of Hertford’s raid in 1544 wreaked havoc on its structure. In 1573, the church’s thatched roof was set ablaze by gunfire from Edinburgh Castle. And in 1650, Cromwell’s troops left St Cuthbert’s “altogider spoyled”. But the spirit of St Cuthbert’s persevered. It stood firm, its bell echoing through the city, a symbol of resilience and continuity.

You walk through the entrance, the air filled with the scent of incense and the warmth of prayer. The interior is surprisingly grand, with an incredibly ornate apse and galleries on three sides. You learn that the marble for the pulpit, the font, and the communion table was sourced from Italy and Egypt, a testament to the church’s international connections. The ceiling of the apse was painted in the 1920s and 1930s and features an alabaster frieze depicting the Last Supper, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece.

St Cuthbert’s is not just a place of worship but a testament to the enduring human spirit. It has weathered storms, witnessed wars, and witnessed the rise and fall of empires. It has been a haven for the faithful, a place of solace, and a symbol of hope. As you stand in the quiet sanctity of St Cuthbert’s, you feel a connection to the past, a shared story of resilience and faith. You take a moment to appreciate the church’s beauty, its grand architecture, and the stories it holds. It is a place that invites reflection and contemplation, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the importance of community.
