Deep within London’s vibrant Soho stands The Argyll Arms. It is more than just a pub. It’s a historical landmark with roots tracing back to 1868. Named after the second Duke of Argyll, this pub holds a special place. It is nestled in the city’s social and historical fabric.

The Argyll Arms offers a warm inclusive atmosphere to all. This ornate Victorian gem offers more than just a visual feast. It’s a place where history comes alive.

The land beneath The Argyll Arms was once owned by the second Duke of Argyll. He was a great military figure. He was a long-time backer of the right horse. His Grace earned plaudits for promoting the Act of Union. This resulted in Scotland and England being joined as one.

Built in 1742, The Argyll Arms acquired its present décor in 1897. It was equipped with snob screens. These ornate partitions were made from dark wood and frosted glass. The aim was to divide the pub. The better class of drinker could share their space with the hoi polloi without having to see them. In 1900, magistrates ordered the removal of several screens. Prostitutes were using the partitioned-off areas for entertaining their clients.

Stepping into The Argyll Arms is like stepping back in time. Its Victorian snug areas now open their arms to everyone. The pub’s rich history is embellished by rumors of a secret tunnel. It once connected it to the Duke’s mansion.

Visitors are struck by its stunning interior. Original mahogany panelling, etched glass partitions, and mirrored walls create a grand ambiance. Argyll Street was laid out by John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll. He was one of the Duke of Marlborough’s leading generals. The Campbells built their London residence. It was on the opposite side of the road between 1735 and 1750.

Today, The Argyll Arms is renowned for its exceptional selection of cask ales and gins. The establishment has seamlessly blended its historical charm with modern offerings. It ensures that each visitor experiences the best of both worlds. The pub food menu boasts hearty British classics. These complement the drinks perfectly.

The Argyll Arms is a Grade II listed building. It has an interior of outstanding national historic importance. The fittings are from an 1890s remodelling. There is a long straight servery and a series of screened-off drinking areas. At the back, Saloon and Dining Room is announced by a high-level glass panel. There is another glittering display of mirrors.

So next time you’re near Oxford Circus, step inside The Argyll Arms. Enjoy a pint amidst the echoes of history. It is a true Victorian treasure.
