Lost in the urban landscape of Lyon’s 8th arrondissement lies Rue Genton. It is a street that whispers tales of transformation and local identity. Rue Genton wasn’t always the throughway it is today. Imagine it as a narrow private passage. It was an impasse until 1959.

The story of Rue Genton begins with a man named François Genton. He owned land in this area in the early 20th century. The street is dedicated to him. Though officially named in 1966, its existence was noted long before. In 1921, it was known as passage Ronchon and Gilibert. In 1928, it was called impasse des Lilas. By 1931, it was associated with 54 rue Bataille.

The municipal council officially named it Rue Genton after improvements. These improvements involved a housing development near Place Marc-Sangnier. Impasse Genton gained access to Rue Professeur-Joseph-Nicolas. It connected via rues Colette and Gaston-Brisac. No longer an impasse, it became Rue Genton.

Today, Rue Genton begins at rue Bataille. It ends at avenue Mermoz. Its southern end blends into the Mermoz housing estate. Recent renovations have reshaped this area. New streets and gardens have replaced older structures.

Walking along Rue Genton, you’ll notice its distinct features. The west side borders the Espace Michel Saez. It has a synthetic turf soccer field. There is also a low building and basketball courts. On the east side, buildings frame a hidden house. The house is tucked behind trees. The gymnase stands out with its round extension.

Two identical houses frame Rue Brissac. They face the concrete structure of Salle Genton. Further along, buildings and houses line the street. One house on Rue Colette is unique. It features a striking door and a beveled corner.

The street’s connection to the Mermoz estate has evolved. The opening of Rue Morisot has transformed the area. Where a gate and garage entrances once stood, gardens now flourish.

The southern section of Rue Genton has seen significant change. Tower blocks have been renovated. Small buildings now face a pedestrian promenade. A row of trees separates pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Rue Genton is more than just a street. It is a place of community and activity. The Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture is here. It includes the Salle Genton. Sports enthusiasts gather at Stade Michel Saez. They also meet at Gymnase Régine Cavagnoud.

The Lyon Cervoise Club meets here. They are beer fans. They host meetings and an annual fair. In 2023, the PLHM celebrated its 90th anniversary. They even brewed a special beer with Brasserie Dulion.

Rue Genton represents Lyon’s evolving urban landscape. It has transformed from a private passage to a vital street. It is a place where history meets community. The street provides a unique glimpse into Lyon’s local life.
