Before it was Palega Recreation Center it was Portola Playground and Recreation Center. In 1996 the Recreation and Park Commission renamed it. They honored Palega a Portola District resident and Balboa High School star. He was a regular visitor to the center. He learned to play the sports that made him a local icon. He was even in the process of becoming a Recreation and Park Department director when he died.
