The early 1960s were a time of great political unrest in France. The Algerian War was raging. The OAS, a right-wing paramilitary group, was carrying out terrorist attacks. They opposed Algerian independence. In response, leftist organizations organized protests.

Anne-Claude Godeau participated in a demonstration against the OAS on February 8, 1962. The police violently repressed the protest at the Charonne metro station. Demonstrators sought refuge in the metro station. Police officers charged the crowd. This caused a deadly crush. Eight people died at the scene. A ninth later succumbed to injuries. Anne-Claude Godeau was among those killed. She was only 24 years old.

News of the Charonne massacre shocked the nation. Thousands attended Anne-Claude Godeau’s funeral in Nantes. Her death became a symbol of the struggle for peace and justice.

In the years following her death, Anne-Claude Godeau was honored in various ways. Streets and public spaces were named after her. These included this Allée Anne-Claude Godeau. These tributes ensured that her memory lived on. They also served as a reminder of the events at Charonne.
