In 1952, a seed of compassion was planted in Penang. This seed blossomed into the Little Sisters Of The Poor. The prominent philanthropists Aw Boon Par and Madam Teh Ah Lan donated the land. The Little Sisters Of The Poor, a home for the aged, found its roots in Air Itam at Lorong Batu Lanchang. The Art Deco style building, complete with a distinctive gateway, opened its doors in 1955. This wasn’t just a building. It was a testament to the enduring spirit of Jeanne Jugan. This Frenchwoman, one of eight children, knew hardship from a young age. Her father’s early death left her mother to raise the family alone. Jeanne’s life took a turn when she worked as a kitchen helper for the Viscountess de la Choue. The Viscountess’s charitable work ignited a spark in Jeanne. This spark led her to work at a local hospital, then to care for an elderly woman. This experience shaped her destiny. In 1839, Jeanne took in a blind widow, Anne Chauvin. This act of kindness marked the unofficial beginning of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Jeanne Jugan’s legacy lives on in 32 countries. The Little Sisters Of The Poor continues to offer comfort and care to the elderly. In Penang, this home stands as a beacon of hope. It reminds us of the power of compassion and the enduring human spirit. The Little Sisters Of The Poor is not just a building. It is a living embodiment of Jeanne Jugan’s vision. It’s a place where the elderly find solace and community. While not a typical tourist spot, the Little Sisters Of The Poor offers a glimpse into the heart of Penang’s compassionate spirit.
