Did the name John Francis Bentley ever cross your mind as you stood before Our Lady of the Holy Souls Roman Catholic Church? This unassuming brick structure, nestled in Kensal New Town, holds a fascinating tale. Our Lady of the Holy Souls began not as this grand edifice, but as a humble two-room cottage in 1862. The Oblates of St. Charles, recognizing the spiritual needs of the burgeoning Catholic community in Kensal, established this initial meeting place. It wasn’t long before the cottage proved too small. A two-story building on Bosworth Road followed in 1872, serving as both church and school. Yet, even this proved insufficient for the growing congregation. Enter John Francis Bentley, the architect who would later design the magnificent Westminster Cathedral. In 1873, a temporary iron church arose on Absalom Road. Then, in 1880, Bentley received the commission for a permanent structure, Our Lady of the Holy Souls Roman Catholic Church. The Oblates, operating on a tight budget, initially requested a simple “Roman” style, without pointed arches or stained glass. Bentley, however, had other ideas. He convinced them to embrace an Early English Gothic style. The foundation stone was laid in 1881, and Our Lady of the Holy Souls Roman Catholic Church opened its doors the following year. While the exterior exudes a modest charm, the interior was once a vibrant display of art and craftsmanship. A large reredos, designed by Father Arnold Baker, who served as rector for over three decades, dominated the chancel. The walls boasted decorations by an artist from George Bodley’s studio. Sadly, much of this original artistry has been lost over the years. The chancel screen was removed in the 1970s, and many of the original furnishings disappeared. But Our Lady of the Holy Souls Roman Catholic Church perseveres. It stands as a testament to the dedication of the Oblates of St. Charles and the architectural vision of John Francis Bentley. It reminds us that even within the seemingly ordinary, extraordinary stories lie waiting to be discovered.
