Did you know that the Igreja de São Sebastião da Pedreira survived the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake? Standing before you is a testament to resilience. This magnificent church a true hidden gem of Lisbon boasts a fascinating history.

The Igreja de São Sebastião da Pedreira inaugurated in 1652 was founded during the reign of King John IV. Its construction reflects the austere “chão” style. The exterior is simple with two bell towers. A double staircase leads to the entrance. Notice the intricately carved stone portal. The medallion above depicts the church’s patron saint Saint Sebastian.

But step inside. The stark exterior is deceptive. The interior explodes with vibrant Baroque artistry from the 17th and 18th centuries. This is a perfect example of “total art” a characteristic of Portuguese decorative programs of the Modern Age. Marvel at the gilded white wood carvings in the main chapel. They are the work of Manuel João da Fonseca dating back to 1685.

Admire the stunning blue and white azulejo tiles depicting scenes from the life of Saint Sebastian. These are mostly from the early 1700s. Gaze at the paintings in the sub-choir. They were created in 1740 by Jerónimo da Silva. He was one of the most respected figure painters in Lisbon during the reign of King John V.

The earthquake damaged the church significantly. The original coffered ceiling from 1670 disappeared. The current stucco ceiling is a later addition from the late 19th century by João Câncio de Sousa. It still features scenes relating to the patron saint.

Even the earthquake couldn’t entirely erase the past. The Baroque choir remains. Its elegant Bernini-esque gray stone columns support a balustrade. It dates from the early 18th century before the devastating earthquake. In the main chapel lies the tomb of D João Bermudes. He was the Patriarch of Alexandria and Ethiopia. His tomb comes from the previous hermitage on this site. The Igreja de São Sebastião da Pedreira is a place of unexpected beauty a silent story of faith and survival. It is more than just a church. It is a living museum reflecting Lisbon’s rich and complex past.
